Service stations and other places that use or sell liquid petroleum products often use underground storage tanks (UST) to store the fuel. Most of the USTs in Iowa are regulated by State law and the IDNR Underground Storage Tank rules found in the Iowa Administrative Code 567-Chapter 135 (use Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® to view the administrative code). The UST regulations ensure owners and operators are using safe practices to prevent and detect leaks.
The UST System Database tracks these regulated sites, as well as some unregulated USTs (usually smaller tanks that need only a one-time registration). Each UST site has a Registration Number, e.g., 198617966.
In the event a release of petroleum is suspected or detected, a Leak Number is assigned to each release. Tank owners and operators are required to investigate any suspected or known petroleum release from the tank system. If contamination is found, the administrative rules specify how to sample soil and groundwater, complete an assessment, and determine if corrective action measures such as site cleanup are needed.
Petroleum releases are investigated using a risk based corrective action (RBCA) approach, which promotes the protection of human health and the environment.
Generally, the database provides information about the UST site location, the site owners, tanks, Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA), site classification and remediation. UST and Leaking UST Site Lists are also available for downloading.
Search the database for UST Sites or Leaking UST Sites

The database tracks sites with a Registration Number or Leak Number.
UST Sites, tracked by Registration Number, may have underground storage tanks that are in use (active) or tanks that have been removed or filled in place.
You can search the database for these sites by Registration Number, Site Name, Site Address, Site City, County or Site Status. Searching for these sites may yield a listing of UST and Leaking UST sites because all sites have a Registration Number.
Leaking UST Sites are tracked with a Leak Number, e.g., 7LTA99. It is possible to have more than one Leak Number assigned to the same Registration Number.
You can search the database for these sites by Leak Number, Site Name, Site Address, Site City, County, Site Status or Leaking UST Classification. The listing will not include UST sites which have not identified contamination.
