The National Map is a USGS initiative built to "provide public access to high-quality, geospatial data and information from multiple partners to help support decision making by resource managers and the public". Among other federal, state, and local organizations across the nation, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is one of the partnering agencies involved in this effort. Click here to visit the USGS home page for The National Map. On their home page you will find The National Map history and future, a list of partnering organizations that contribute to this product, a description of data that is accessible on this interactive map, and more.
The Iowa DNR contributes by providing access to several geospatial data layers located on our map server. The Iowa layers that we provide, including "Iowa River", "DNR Lands", "Air Photography 2002 (CIR)", and many more, are pulled by a USGS server into The National Map and combined with other federal, state, and regional geospatial data layers to create one seamless map of the nation. When you open The National Map Viewer, zoom into the state of Iowa. From that view you can access the data maintained and served by the Iowa DNR.
