Please note that the Map Information site feature is available in all of the mapping applications except for the Water Monitoring Atlas and the Watershed Atlas. In those 2 maps, the same information can be found by using the Get Map Coordinates tool.
The Map Information site
feature appears on the very bottom left of the interactive mapping website in the browser's Status Bar. If the Status Bar is not visible in your browser, please go to the browser View menu and check the Status Bar dropdown. Map Information is a supported feature in Internet Explorer version 6 browser software. If your browser does not support this feature, use the Get Map Coordinates tool in the Water Monitoring Atlas or Watershed Atlas interactive maps.
The information only appears if your mouse is hovering on the Interactive
Map portion of the website. Map Information contains 3 parts:
From left to right, the
first part is called Map. Following "Map:" are 2 sets of numbers
with a comma separating them. These numbers define map coordinates in
easting and northing measurements.
All of the data layers contained in the IDNR interactive mapping websites
are projected in the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection
using the 1983 North American Datum in Zone 15 North. The unit
of projection is in meters and are measured using easting and northing.
The first set of numbers before the comma is the easting of where your
mouse cursor is currently located on the map. The second set of numbers
after the comma is the northing. As you move the mouse cursor around
the map, these numbers change instantly. Easting and northing coordinates
can be converted to latitude and longitude. This conversion process
is not available in this application, but a user can do this on his/her
own computer.
The second part is called
Image. Following "Image:" are 2 sets of numbers with a comma
separating them. The Interactive Map is actually a .jpg
image. When you carry out the function of one of the Tools
on the map, or change the visibility of data layers in the Legend
and click on the Redraw Map Button, a
new .jpg image displays as the Interactive Map. The .jpg image contains
pixel dimensions for length and width, like 500 length x 650 width.
The 2 sets of numbers that display in this part describe the location
of the mouse on the .jpg image in pixel dimensions, with the 0,0 position
in the absolute upper left (northwest) corner of the Interactive Map.
The third and final part
is called ScaleFactor. The set of numbers following "ScaleFactor:"
relate the zoomed in scale of the Interactive Map to the resolution
of the .jpg image. The number displayed after the ScaleFactor is defined
as: map units per pixel. This is calculated by taking the maximum "x"
value for the map extent and subtracting the minimum "x" value
for the map extent, and dividing this number by the width of the map
image in pixels. For imagery data layers, like the CIR 2002 layer, the
ScaleFactor = 1 will give the user the best resolution of the .jpg image
(i.e. the Interactive Map) with the closest zoom.
